The main goal for the Managing Director Korea is to effectively oversee and manage the solar and wind project teams. These responsibilities include origination, acquisition, greenfield development, management of the critical procurement, construction, and financing phase for ongoing projects (including grid connection); overseeing the business’ corporate functions; and the broader strategic development of BayWa r.e. Korea’s business to develop new solar PV and wind projects in Korea as well as establishing other BRE businesses where the opportunity arises such as storage.
The Managing Director Korea will mainly drive results from existing and future projects by leading on effective business development activities as well as defining and implementing strategies, business plans and roadmaps to successfully implement projects in Korea. The main focus in the next three years is on successfully building, financing and selling projects out of the secured pipeline as well as identifying, developing, and acquiring new business contacts with project developers and business partners with the goal of acquiring/developing further solar and wind projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management and oversight of all activities related to the operational business units and all project related SPVs, commercial, financial and corporate matters, including deal structuring, PPA sourcing, project financing, project sales as well as corporate controlling/accounting and tax, general legal matters, and to a certain extent procurement.
The position will be based in Seoul, South-Korea.

Responsibilities we will trust you with:

  • Responsible for the further development of BayWa r.e. Projects’ presence in Korea, actively identifying and promoting investment opportunities for BayWa r.e. in renewable energy projects. 

  • Establishing necessary project strategies, market survey and competitive analysis to define attractive new project opportunities.

  • Initiating and managing the acquisition, greenfield development, and implementation of new projects in Korea (Wind and Solar), including:

    • Overseeing due diligence and negotiation of project sourcing/acquisition contracts;

    • Preparing investment approval papers for opportunities in line with Group requirements and for opportunities meeting BayWa r.e.’s standard investment criteria;

    • Establishing and maintain relationships with project landowners, real estate and project brokers, construction partners;

    • Conducting effective two-way consultation and communication with project teams and external business partners (e.g. developers, construction companies, grid connection providers, PPA off takers), to ensure they are fully committed to the project and working towards the achievement of the company’s objectives and are regularly updated on project performance;

    • Establishing and managing the Project Teams and core processes in line with BayWa r.e. Group best practices and organizational structure and recommending changes to procedures or working practices when improvement’s opportunities are identified.

  • Ensure the smooth running of all central functions, including Finance & Controlling, Legal and Compliance, Corporate Finance and HR, work and collaborate with the regional functional heads to manage local resources to implement global policies and strategies for each respective function.

  • To always support the company to achieve its dedicated aim of “Best Practices” and delivering high quality renewable energy projects at the lowest cost of energy.

  • Your areas of knowledge and expertise:

    Market Knowledge : understand the interrelationships between the company, business partners and competitors as well as regulators/public bodies; and be able to capitalize on this knowledge to implement the projects profitably as well as seize opportunities that would extend BRE’s market share with new projects. You must be able to understand the implications of market trends and to draw conclusions for appropriate actions.

    Performance : be capable of acquiring and successfully implementing solar and wind projects and new service mandates, in order to achieve a performance above budgetary projection. You will be required to negotiate complex, long-term contracts and to get Group buy-in to the business context and risk profile of such contracts. You should be able to develop business proposals and to initiate and successfully conclude complex business transactions. 
    Stakeholder Management : be committed to a transparent communication style, with a stakeholder/customer-oriented approach and a good track record in identifying stakeholder/customer needs and converting them into profitable business initiatives.

    Leadership : have a natural entrepreneurial tendency and show a desire to lead from the front, explaining the business context and opportunity to others and encourage others to stretch themselves within the corporate framework. You should be able to show recognition for concrete achievements, support and encouragement in the event of failures or mistakes. 

    Collaboration : be able to build close partnering relationships with project developers, local authorities, business partners and colleagues; and ensure that the mutual interests of all parties are met. You will show an ability to recognize sources of conflict, such as cultural, functional or geographic issues and act to resolve them.

    Is this role the right fit for you?

    • Do you have a degree in Engineering or business administration, or equivalent experience in real estate development, project management business or electrical engineering?

    • Do you have an 8 years’ experience at a management position in the Korean renewable and/or conventional energy markets?

    • Are you well acquainted with the steps of wind and solar PV and Wind project acquisition, development and implementation, i.e. real estate, construction, financing and operations or similar?

    • Are you a “hands on” person with a “roll-up the sleeves and can-do” attitude, comfortable with working towards targets and objectives and with operation in the Korean and ideally international business environment.?

    • Do you have a very good communication and presentation skills as well as an ability to develop trusting and open relationships with colleagues and employees?

    • Do you have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working as part of an international team?

    • Are you a strategic, commercial and practical thinker?

    • Are you energetic, dynamic, mature and tenacious?
